Old Masters Oil Paintings & Art Reproductions on Canvas
Share
My Old Masters reproduction artwork is masterfully created on canvas per your size specifications. With this example, I show you how you can even substitute your own photo or that of a loved one in an Old Master painting like "Le Printemps" (Springtime) by Pierre-Auguste Cot.
My mom, who passed away last October had a print of this painting hanging in her living room. She loved this Old Master painting and I have been wanting to paint her in place of the girl in the original painting.
The trick was to find a photo of my mom that was taken at about the same age as the girl in the painting, hopefully, with a similar angle of the head. After sifting through tons of photos I found one that would work.
I flipped the photo and had to do a lot of guesswork to adjust the angle of the head to look semi-similar. Then I set out to get the key features, such as her eyes, lips, and nose to be at the right angles. My mom had beautiful eyes and I spend a great deal of time working on getting them to look like hers. It was not an easy task looking into my mom's eyes, knowing that I will never have a chance at gazing into them again. While fighting off the constant stream of tears, I finally got them to look like I remember them.
I kept the hair the same as in the original painting since it actually resembles the hair color my mom had as a child. The trick with Old Master reproductions is that you want them to look as close to the original as possible, yet have the image of the replacement figure be recognizable as well. It's a constant back and forth, tweaking here and there. I can already see, after posting these images that I still have more work to do, but the good news is that the painting is getting closer and closer to being finished. Here is what the original painting by Pierre-Auguste Cot looks like :
Here is my reproduction so far ...
I will post close up detail shots of the different areas in the painting as soon as I get a chance.
