The Island Wedding Shadow Box

The shadow box is almost finished, and I am in the final stages of cleaning everything up. I wanted to share some of the things I have done for this shadow box. To start the backdrop of the ocean scenery was custom-painted. In order to make the foreground match with the background . I used texture mediums and oil paint to give the greenery more definition. Just as in real life, items in the foreground are detailed and clear, and as they recede, they become less in focus and duller in color. It's the middle-ground that needs to fool the eye and by playing around with color and handling of texture. I hope to have achieved this.

There are four columns, which are covered with roses and a few other plants and flowers. Even though some of the flowers are covered by the figures, I wanted to include the details so that the piece looks finished even when viewed from the side.

The columns are covered in flowers, and I have lost count of how many of them I made using air-dry clay. Each was hand colored and then glued to the piece. The tricky part was to make the flowers look as if they are growing
out of the arch rather than stuck on.

I wanted to bride and groom to have everything I could spot in the reference photos, like the corsage and jewelry. The figures were modeled and then printed with filament. Then everything was painted. I also changed the hairline of the groom and made it fuller. The placement of the couple was dictated by the bride's long dress. There is only so much room in a shadow box and rather than cutting off a portion of the dress I made them stand to the side. I am still going to add the half veil , but I need to figure out how to drape it so that it stays in place.

The top and left arch are also covered in flowers.

I took a photo of the entire room box in natural daylight (no lamps) so that you can see the color inside the box when the lid is closed. Right now there is a protective film over the acrylic front, so once that is removed everything will look more clear.
