The Art of Possibilities
Some time ago, my daughter gave me a book titled "The Art of Possibility" by Rosamund Stone Zander and Benjamin Zander. I usually do not write book reviews, but I found this book so inspiring, that I like to share my thoughts.
Benjamin Zander shares his experience as a conductor of the Boston Philharmonic and as a teacher and opens our eyes to how we often hinder ourselves from experiencing life to the fullest. He is definitely an optimist, but I found I liked his uplifting stories, parables and personal anecdotes inspiring. Life is what it is; regardless if things are good or bad, we are often faced with situations that disappoint us, but he points out that we have options to change what we have been delt with, by thinking outside of the box and looking for ways to make the experiences more pleasant and rewarding.
I absolutely love this quote:
"A shoe factory sends two marketing scouts to a region of Africa to study the prospects for expanding business. One sends back a telegram saying:
SITUATION HOPELESS STOP NO ONE WEARS SHOES
The other writes back triumphantly,
GLORIOUS BUSINESS OPPORTUNITY STOP THEY HAVE NO SHOES "
It really all boils down to weather we choose to waddle in defeat and self-pity or decide to take charge. Sometimes to reach a goal, rather than forcing immediate results by going from point A to point B, we have to take the winding path. It might take longer, but it is a path full of surprises and unexpetced experiences that can enrich our lives in ways never imaginable.
