Dachshund/ Jack Russell Mix Dog Portrait of Oskie
Share
It's November and that means that new portrait orders are coming in to be painted for Christmas. Today I am sharing how I paint Oskie, a Dachshund/ Jack Russell mix. The photos above are the reference images I have to work with.
My client wants me to paint this photo and fix the fur color to match the other photo. To do this, I played around in Photoshop and adjusted the coloring until I had a fairly close match to work with.

As with every painting a rough sketch is created to place the figure on the canvas. With every successive layer color is added and tweaked to get one step closer to the finished painting. Since I am super busy right now I will share a slide show (look on the home page) until I have more time to write more comments about the procedure.
Update
As it turned out I did not have enough time to post more updates, so I am going to share the video of the painting here.
I love how vibrant looking the fur is and hope that my client will be equally pleased with it. The painting has dimension now and Okie looks like he is ready to jump right off the canvas.
before you could hardly see the eyes and now they glisten with life. By adding various thick and thin brush strokes and shifting between vibrant to dull, dark to light the hairs on the muzzle stand out now.
This was a 14x18in oil on canvas, a good size to show the entire body and still see all the details in the face.
