Tomatillo

Tomatillo

I found these Tomatillos in my local grocery store and just had to give them a try. Native to Latin America, the Tomatillo is widely used in Mexican and other Latin American cooking. Once the husk is removed it reveals a bright green fruit, looking very much like a green tomato. But unlike tomatoes that are sweet, the Tomatillo has a nice citrus flavor and only tiny seeds.

This fruit is a popular addition to Salsa Verde, and is also the primary ingredient in Chile Verde. I used mine in a salad, but I heard that roasting them concentrates the flavor and intensifies the sweetness further.
