Stage 2 - Underpainting


The canvas gets a quick oil out and then a quick wash of Raw Umber is placed over the entire area. Now is the time to pull out anything that belongs in the light and anything that belongs to the shadows.

Ideally this stage should look like a cubist style work ala Picasso, but I can't seem to break the habit of starting to model. At this stage the paint flows well and it is easy to develop the painting from a flat drawing to a painting that shows form.
