American Dingo Portrait 529

When you think about a wild dog, one usually thinks of a breed similar to a wolf. However North America has its very own wild dog called the American Dingo, also known as the Carolina Dog. Dr. I. Lehr Brisbin Jr., discovered this breed in the 1920's living in the most isolated stretches of the southeastern United States.

I have never heard of this breed until I recently was asked to paint a portrait of one. This breed has a tan colored coat and looks slender. With alert eyes this is a very good looking dog.

The Carolina Dogs have an interesting history. They are descendant from the “pariah dogs” which were brought to North America more than 9,000 years ago. These dogs are one of the few breeds that still exist which can be classified as a “primitive” breed, largely unaffected by man or selective breeding. Though these dogs still retain much of their wild nature, they are gentle and devoted companions. With proper training and socialization the Carolina Dog can make a wonderful family pet.

I painted this AmericanDingo in a natural landscape of long grass and a woodsy darker backdrop, which I felt suited the nature of this dog better than a painterly soft backdrop.
