Painting Progression #2

Painting Progression 2 In this painting, work has focused on the lips. The trick with painting the lips is to avoid lines at all cost. Easier said than done - it took me forever to get that concept fairly right. The trick is to pay attention to how the muscles move the fleshy parts of the lips. By keeping the lips fleshy looking and a bit wobbly you get that effect as if tons of tiny facial muscles are at work. This approach helps to give the person a less stern appearance and somewhat of a satisfied look.
