Domestic Cat in Garden Portrait

Cat Portrait Commission "Jake"

Cat Portrait Commission "Jake"

Today I am sharing my latest cat portrait commission of Jake. Jake is a very handsome, in-door cat who often sits by the window longingly looking outside. After talking to my client, we both agreed to grant Jake his wish and place him in a garden setting amongst lots of flowers.

This was the first time my client had ever ordered a custom hand - painted portrait and she was not sure what to expect. I explained the differences in mediums and painting styles and assured here that the end result will be a beautiful portrait of her beloved pet. In the slide show you can see how I started this cat portrait by painting everything by hand. As the painting progressed the garden elements that were not part of the original reference photo were added in. This allowed by client to follow the step by step creation of the painting.

I continued to paint in details to bring out some of the color information especially in the darker areas of the fur and ears.  As an artist it is very difficult for me to stop tweaking and I continued to add a little more details here and there to make the portrait really pop. My client said she loves the painting and can't wait to receive it. It is drying now and I will hate to see Jake going home.
