Some reference photos that my client submit have backgrounds that are not well suited for a painted portrait. For example in this reference photo there was a chain link fence that just did not work as a background. I decided to place the child in a field on flowers and really go for a very painterly approach. Below are some detail shots of the painting.
I used a lot of short strokes to build up a lush green lawn area and only hinted at the blooms and leaves. The little girl was painted with a softer approach and larger strokes to create the softness we associate with a child's skin.
