Miniature Office with a View: A Custom 1:24 Scale MIT Tribute

I am currently in the rough stages of a very special gift commission "The Scholar's Sanctuary" —a miniature recreation of a distinguished MIT office that overlooks the iconic Charles River. This project is all about capturing the specific atmosphere of a space where deep academic work and personal history meet.

Building the Foundation

wall assembly

To keep the build lightweight without sacrificing structural integrity, I am using a foam construction to build up the back wall. This allows me to "set in" the window deeply, creating a realistic architectural recess.

river view

To bring the outside world in, I have placed an image of the river view behind double faux glass. This layering technique is a favorite of mine; it creates a convincing illusion of depth, making it feel as though you are truly looking out a window rather than just at a flat print.

Texture and Detail

  • The Floor: I've already laid down the carpet and sealed it with Mod Podge. This not only secures the material but adds a bit of dimension and "lived-in" texture to the office floor.
  • The Window Frame: I am currently painting the window sill and frame with an Ivory chalk paint (specifically Hello Hobby Desert Tan). This matte finish is perfect for covering open seams and giving the woodwork a clean, sculpted look.

Next Steps

Once the window assembly is fully cured, my next focus is the long table that will stretch the entire length of that back wall. From there, I'll move to the right-hand wall to install the custom bookshelves.

Miniature Tea Kettle

While the room is in its "rough stages," I've already begun crafting some of the smaller accessories and books that will eventually fill the shelves. It's a complex puzzle of scale and memory, but seeing the river view through that ivory frame for the first time has really set the tone for the rest of the build.

I am still working on the video for this built, but here is a sneak peak.

Note for the client: I am focusing on ensuring the "Conversation Layout" between the chairs feels natural once the main furniture pieces are installed!
