SDS Portrait Vignette of a Nine Year old Boy

Grisaille Portrait of a Boy

I am currently working on this portrait vignette is of a nine year old boy measuring (9" x 12"). I was asked not to mention his name so for the time being I will refer to him as "SDS" until a suitable title is found. I am using this painting for a step by step tutorial of my working technique. Wash In Procedure

As the painting developed further, the solidity of the head developed further as well. There are still some areas that could be better, but I will make sure to look out for them when the first layer of the gray grizaille is applied.

I also decided to take out the stick and do away with the shadow on the cheek. That element did nothing to enhance the painting and therefore was taken out. Before moving further ahead this layer has to completely dry to the touch, so that the Umber does not mix with the next layer.

Wash In Procedure

As you can see all I have done is refined the painting further working towards a three dimensional feel. I am still debating if I want to keep the stick in the background. It intersects areas in an undesirable way and is really not doing wonders for the composition.
