Brainstorming the Layout for a New Commission! 🎨

Pet Portrait Sketch
Just accepted a new portrait commission and it’s officially time for the best part: the preliminary sketches!
Before I even touch the main canvas, I always spend dedicated time mapping out potential layouts. This step is crucial for working through different compositional elements like:
  • Framing and Orientation: Should it be landscape to include more background context, or a tighter vertical crop for intimacy?
  • Posing: Finding the most natural and engaging posture that reflects the subject's personality.
  • Negative Space: Deciding where to let the eye rest and how to guide focus to the subject’s face.
Working in these small thumbnails helps me quickly eliminate weaker ideas and refine the strongest composition. It ensures the final piece is balanced and dynamic.
Excited to finalize the direction with my client and move into the painting phase! Stay tuned for progress shots
I will be posting a video of the work in progress below:'
