The Importance of Line in Abstract Art
Abstract art is meant to evoke a feeling through the exploration of seven major elements of color, shape, line, form, space, texture value and color. Artists manipulate these elements and mix them with design principles to create interesting visual art. The importance of line in abstract art can be demonstrated through how the artist uses line in the composition. Lines can be dotted, wavy, straight, spiral, fat/thin, zig zag, curvy, vertical, horizontal, diagonal, parallel, angles and perpendicular. How an artists combines the lines and pairs them with color and shapes create art that we find stimulating, calm or even upsetting.
"Organic Abstraction" is my latest painting in which I wanted to explore the importance of line to create a very abstract painting that has a more organic feel to it. I used a lot of lines as can be seen in the detail shot and varied their thickness to create a sense of texture and movement on the canvas. By using bold colors against more muted ones and varying the degree of thickness of the lines and their directions the painting is a juxtaposition of calm and excitement.
