Portrait of Buddy
Recently I received a commission for a French Bulldog portrait that is intended as a gift. My client send me a variety of photos and after looking for the most suitable portrait pose, we deiced on the image below.
The owner of this dog is a carpenter and my client wanted to include an element of carpentry in the painting. So I came up with various backgrounds and let me client choose the one she thought would best fit in the recipients home.
Tastes differ greatly and in my experience it is a mistake to assume that because I like a certain background my client would as well. As a portrait artist I know which backdrop would best suit the painting and and I usually offer my suggestions and reasons as to why. Here you can see that since buddy has a relative dark coat he looks best against a lighter background. In the image below, you can see how the colors of his fur clearly contrast against the light wood grain of the background.
