Gathering Mistletoe

kissing-under-mistletoe.jpg

Traditionally Mistletoe was gathered during the first weeks of December as a symbol for a long and prosperous life.

In England and the United States it was thought that if you share a kiss under mistletoe suspended from a door frame, you will be destined to always be together. Kissing under the Mistletoe has to this day remained a way for lovers to quickly exchange a kiss during the holiday season.

Mistletoe grows high up in the mountains at a time when all other trees loose their leaves. Always green, it has tiny white berries that peak through the foliage given off just a hint of glistening during the holiday season. The Kelts believed that the berries had magical powers and added the plant to several magic drink. It was also believed that hanging the bushels in your home would ward off evil spirits, sickness and other bad disasters.

When I spotted the vintage illustration of the Mistletoe Gatherers, I thought it would be ideal to turn it into a painting. Framed and hung over a fireplace it will be the perfect decorative touch this season to add a bit of winter scenery and some mistletoe! The mixed media painting can be ordered in a variety of sizes from the drop down menu.
