I remember a time when my my mom would boil eggs and add all sorts or strange things into the boiling water to give the eggs color. Yes, these were the days before you could buy Easter Egg Kits, a time when mom used traditional methods handed down from one generation to the next, to decorate for Easter.
The most common way to dye eggs was with brown onion peels - a technique that still works just as well today. The onion peels gives the eggs a nice reddish brown color and the technique is super easy to do.
You need: onion peels (only the brown casing), 2 tablespoons vinegar, 1.5 liters of water, flowers and leaves, raw white eggs, old nylon tights and twine. Put the onion peels, vinegar and water in a saucepan and bring to a boil. Meanwhile moisten flowers and leaves and lay on the egg, cut off a piece of pantyhose and put it over, taut and tie on the opposite side of the egg. Put eggs in the onion soup, boil for 10 minutes, then leave to rest for half an hour. If you like, the finished eggs can be rubbed with a bacon rind or oil for a glossy look.
