Poodle Portraits-by-Nc
I consider myself a colorist, an artist who uses color in a special or skillful way. So in my paintings it is not uncommon to find some very unusual colors. For example in the the portrait of this poodle, whose reference photos showed a dark fur, I went to town with blue, purple and grey tones. I even used some of the reflective light from the surrounding background to punch up colors in the nose and brow area. Why you ask? When working with animal fur most pets have a rather boring color. If I had painted this dog entirely in black you would not see the dark eyes stand out, the muzzle would be a bit lost and overall the whole painting would look like any other image of a poodle. The highlights and added tones create a lifelike quality and make the pet pop.
