Abandoned Library Room Box Miniature Diorama
Share

Every great diorama starts with a spark of inspiration, and for this piece, it all began with a simple wooden box I picked up from Daiso a while ago. I had been waiting for the right idea to strike before diving in, and once the concept of a forgotten, timeworn library took root, I knew exactly what I wanted to build.

Because the box is quite compact, I wanted to create a sense of mystery and depth right away. Stained glass windows felt like the perfect way to let a bit of colorful light filter into the dusty space. After hunting around on YouTube for techniques, I came across wonderful tutorials by Heather from Thicketworks, which gave me the exact guidance and inspiration I needed to craft those intricate gothic windows and get this miniature world started.

To bring the architectural details of the library to life, I began by downloading Cricut files to create custom Gothic-style windows complete with intricate stained glass upper panels. Using my Dremel tool and hand saws, I carefully cut out the openings in the wooden box to frame those delicate window panes.

Next came the foundation of the room. For the flooring, I ran a piece of cardstock through my Sizzix Big Shot Machine using a Sizzix 3-D Embossing Lumber Folder to stamp a realistic wood grain texture. I gently dusted the surface with various shades of brown chalk to bring out the details, and then layered on oil paints and gel mediums to build up a deep, rich wood finish in no time.

Every great scene needs the right props, and it all started with this miniature furniture set I purchased on a whim. The moment I laid eyes on it, I was completely inspired to create something aged and delightfully spooky.

To give the pieces centuries of character, I started by applying a heavily diluted dark brown oil paint, using a rubbing technique to sink deep shadows into every carved detail. Afterward, I dusted dark and light grey chalk across the surfaces to create a convincing, undisturbed layer of age-old dust.

Of course, no abandoned library is complete without signs of neglect, so the final touch was adding delicate spider webs. For this, I used UHU glue—its uniquely thin and stringy consistency makes it ideal for spinning realistic, creepy-crawly webs across the corners. Aside from this meticulously aged set, every other element in the library was hand-crafted from scratch!

The bookshelf was made out of wood and modeled after a similar bookshelf that I had made for the Rose Garden Tea House. Here, I left some shelves slightly uneven to give the bookcase the look of shelves that have sagged under the weight of heavy books.

As I mentioned, the table underwent extensive aging to bring out all of its intricate carved details. My vision was to create a space that felt deeply lived-in, dedicated to studying all aspects of humanity. Resting on the surface is an open antique bible revealing its delicate pages, alongside a handwritten text accompanied by a magnifying glass.

A 3D-printed skull and tiny glass beakers sit gathering dust, slowly blanketed by delicate spider webs. Making those beakers was quite the tedious project: I crafted them by carefully disassembling and cutting down Christmas light bulbs, which proved to be quite fiddly since the glass kept shattering everywhere except where I needed it to!

Lighting is everything when you're working in a compact space measuring 20 cm wide by 11 cm deep and 15 cm high (7.87" x 4.33" x 5.91"). With the help of my husband, we designed and 3D-printed a custom chandelier, then wired it with the tiniest LED lights we could find. I attached a discreet, battery-operated switch to the back so the scene can be illuminated at night. It runs on two flat batteries for full, bright illumination—though that charming, atmospheric flickering you might catch in the video only happens if you pop in a single old battery!

And now for the grand reveal: the library is officially finished. I created a short video to take you on a little adventure right inside the completed room box. Grab a cup of tea and take a look below!
