Maltese Portrait

maltese-painting.jpg

Today I am working on a Maltese portrait. Unfortunately the photo reference I was given is tiny and I am guessing as to what this cutie looks like. So for now I am trying to add texture, since this painting will be mostly in browns, ochre, and soft yellow shades. I'll post another update soon.

Every client has different ideas as to how they like their pet painted or in what type of setting the pet should be shown. In this case,  I was asked to make the little dog only slightly larger than in the original photo reference and keep pretty much the same color scheme. It creates a painting that emphasizes how small this little dog is. Working only with a few colors the overall feel of the painting is one of calm. I have to let the painting sit for a bit and will continue in about a week to work more on details in the fur.
