Boating portraits are a great way to remember special experiences. The portrait of Boy at Sea shows a young boy as he gazes across the water. The original reference photo lacked vibrancy and therefore I decided to punch everything up a notch.
By introducing lots of contrast and texture the light areas of the painting pick up light and reflect it back making the painting appear to glow. The varying texture also makes the painting look painterly and more interesting to look at.
Since this is a portrait of a little boy, I also had to make sure that I catch his expression as he so contently gazes upon the water. The added highlights in the eye and soft shading of skin color in the face help to create a lifelike likeness.
