More time was spend building up the eyes. I think it's important to make the eye and the surrounding area look as realistic as possible. If you compare this close-up shot with the previous one, you will see how successive layers added to the roundness of the eyeball and dimension to the muscle that holds it in place.
This is my work station ~ I have my monitor placed on a lazy Susan, so I can rotate it towards my easel when needed. I used to print out my reference photos, but I like being able to zoom in or change values in order to see certain details better.
I love the colors of the fur of this dog and decided to use a bubble gum pink to make the painting look more contemporary and make it pop. Rather than using plain grey I also added some blue. It is very subtle, sneaking in colors works as long as you don't venture to far from the existing values. There is still work to be done so another update will follow soon.
I love painting eyes and built up the layers slowly. This eye still needs work, but it gives you an idea how I proceed. The pupil is always pure black. I also make one eye the more dominant one, that's usually the one closer to the viewer.
A new dog portrait series is being painted and this Weimaraner, named "Scooby" has just been started. I have a little under a month to complete the dog series for the April show at the
Artist Eye gallery and with a goal of three 9x12 paintings and several 6x6 inch little gems, it's time to move on to a new dog portrait. I have received some great photo submissions for the April Contest on my fan page titled "Pooches with Attitude" - "Scooby" being one of the submissions.
I had asked for photos of dogs that have a lot of character to be included in the series. The owners of the dog photos I ended up using received a Greeting Card set of the dogs painted in this series. All that was required was to "Like" the fan page and to email me their pet's photo.
