How to Keep Cut Freesias Blooming Longer

When I need a break from working in the studio, I love to head outside into the garden and pick some flowers. It is a relaxing task that requires little effort and yet is so rewarding. The rosemary bushes are full of tiny purple flowers and I love the scent they emit when you touch them.

Here are some tips to make these beauties last longer in your vase.

  • cut the flowers when they are still in bud. As they slowly open in a vase your freesias can last up to three weeks.
  • Cut the stems at a 45 degree angle under water so the flowers can drink up enough water once they are in the vase
  • Place the cut flowers in a washed out clean vase to prevent bacteria growth
  • For best results, add flower food to the water
  • Change the water twice a week.
  • Place them in the fridge over night. To be honest that's just too much work for me but the cool air does prolong their lifespan
  • Snip off any spend flowers

Yellow and white freesias are the most fragrant and also have the longest vase life.

Freesias have one of the strongest scents in the world and are commonly used in designer perfumes, bath oils, soaps, and lotions.
