Step 2:

Here are some detail shots:

Once the pale blue underpainting was in place I followed up by building multiple layers of color. The fur of the dog is a deep brown, almost black. One of the problems of black paint is that it belongs to the colors that are famous for sinking in and becoming dull in appearance as they dry. To avoid this and to bring interest to the fur I chose to use a combination of deep blues, purples, brown and even a deep red tint.

Working with complimentary colors (colors that are opposite each other on the color wheel), I really pushed the colors around over state everything which I wanted the viewer to notice. You can see this best that the eye area.

A painting has to have a visual hierarchy and therefore the paws are much softer in rendition. As a matter of fact the hind leg has very little detail on it, because it is the least important part of the painting. Well, I hope that you like the recent work and share it with your friends.

Step 1:

When I did my last "Pooches with Attitude" contest on my Facebook page Cheryl Base submitted photos of her German Shepherd. I need to change out my artwork at the gallery and decided to exhibit my new pet portraits. Since I am short one 9 x12 inch size, I figured I paint this beautiful dog.

My palette consists of Paynes Grey, Ivory Black, Ultramarine Violet, Brown Madder Alizarin, Gold Ochre, Titanium White, Prussian Blue and Red. This palette will create some rich dark fur that looks lively and interesting. After a pale blue wash in the colors were layered to create the softness of the fur. Now I will be going back in and bring out more definition in the areas that need to pop.
