Reproduction Painting of the Palace Guard by Ludwig Deutsch

The palace guard painting progression

Another update on the painting progression of the Palace Guard by Ludwig Deutsch. After the initial underpainting, it was time to add color and start working on the background. I have been working long hours, but I figured since the portrait of the little boy is currently drying it's a good time to push this painting as far as I can.

Regardless of what medium I paint, the progression goes from a monochromatic very loose work to more and more detail as the work continues. For me, every Old Master copy is an opportunity to learn about composition and color harmonies. I love seeing how everything slowly builds up and fits together.
