Rod Iron Skirting for Dollhouse

Dollhouse before Upgrade

I decided to add a rod iron skirting around the base of the house to visually tie in all the black design elements and to ground the house. In the photo above you can see that the dollhouse sits on a white surface. To me it looks like a box with windows and it lacks context or in this case curb appeal.

One of the challenges with a dollhouse is that in order to gain access to the interior a facade panel has to swing out. This of course would knock everything that is placed in its way off. My solution to this problem was to make sure that everything had to fit below the outward swinging panel.

For example, here I created a faux grass area which was glued on top of some cardboard, thick enough to slide under the house. To ground the house the same rod iron design that can be seen on the side of the balcony was 3D printed and glued to the base. Just like in painting, repetition causes harmony. Now a gravel path leads up to the house and once greenery such as plants and flowers are added the house will have a nice curb appeal and become visually much more interesting looking.
