How to make a Jute Rug
I have not posted in a while since I was really busy with custom commissions, but things have slowed down a tad so I thought I share with you how to make a rug out of jute rope.
Jute may be one of the most versatile vegetable fibers to ever hit your favorite craft store. If you haven’t been introduced to its impressive properties and benefits, you’re missing out on a unique material. It is easy to work with and very durable. The fiber can be found dyed in different colors see here and you will need 30 yd to make a medium to large rug. Glue is also needed and I prefer using a tacky glue that does not set as fast as super glue. You will also need scissors to cut the twine.
The process is messy since you are basically gluing the twine in circles around itself until you get the desired size.
For the medium size you will need to twirl the twine until you reach a size of about 5 inches in diameter. Then cut and glue the end to the last row and set it aside to completely dry.
Now you can start repeating the process and make 11 smaller circles, each about 1" in size.
Glue each circle against the larger one. For added stability you can add little circles in the gaps and even put a liner on the back. I love making these rugs, they look really pretty. As you can see my studio space has one in green and I will be making another one in blue for my kitchen.
Of course if you prefer to save your manicure and don't want to deal qwith messy glue you can always order a rug from me :)
