Speed, Soul, and Sketch: A Special Mini Schnauzer Commission

SCHNAUZER PROTRAIT ON MAC

Every portrait has a story, and this latest Mini Schnauzer commission is all about beating the clock without losing the heart of the subject.

Because this portrait is a special gift with a looming deadline, the client opted for a Digital Portrait. While I love the texture of traditional oils, digital painting allows for a faster turnaround time—perfect for when a high-quality, soulful gift is needed in a hurry.

SCHNAUZER TONAL SKETCH

The Process: Digital, but Traditional

Just like with my oil paintings, I don’t just "click a button." I start every piece with a detailed drawing on a medium-toned canvas. This traditional approach allows me to map out the placement and establish the lights and darks in the proper order before any color is applied.

A New Bonus for My Clients

I’ve realized that many clients fall in love with the initial sketch phase. Because of this, I am now offering my digital portrait clients a complimentary JPEG file of the drawing. This allows you to have a secondary piece of art to print at home—perfect for a hallway or a smaller nook!

Bringing it to Life

The journey doesn't stop at the sketch. Following the same logic as my oil work, the next step involves blocking in the colors for the foreground and background, followed by the figure itself. As the painting progresses, you’ll see the fine details of the Schnauzer’s signature coat and soulful eyes emerge in color.

The Background Strategy The choice of color for a background determines how the subject "comes forward" in a painting. For this Schnauzer, I opted for muted grey-blues with a punch of deep violet in the foreground. These cool tones act as a perfect foil to the warm, earthy browns of the muzzle, making those colors truly pop and giving the piece immediate depth.

The Windows to the Soul The eyes and nose are always the first features I fully render. There is a psychological reason for this: once the eyes are painted, the portrait starts "looking back" at me. It transforms the digital canvas into a living subject, providing the motivation and personality needed to guide the rest of the brushwork.

The Illusion of Depth Painting is ultimately the magic trick of making a flat surface appear three-dimensional. As an artist, I achieve this not just by copying a photo, but through the careful exaggeration and manipulation of colors. By pushing the contrast more than what is seen in the original image, I can "sculpt" the form of the dog.

Harmonizing the Palette To make the painting feel cohesive, I "sneak" the background and foreground colors into the fur in the guise of shadows. I avoid using pure black, as it tends to dull a piece. Instead, I celebrate color and texture; keeping a coat one uniform color is boring, but adding reflected blues and violets makes the painting take on a life of its own.

Seeing the Difference Now, when you look at the flat reference photo and compare it to the emerging painting, you can see the difference that artistic interpretation makes. It moves beyond a mere likeness and becomes a tribute to the pet's character.

The Digital Advantage Looking at the final version on the monitor, the richness of the digital "oils" is clear. Because the client chose this medium to meet a tight deadline, the process is now seamless. This high-resolution JPEG file can be emailed instantly to the client, allowing them to print the portrait on location and have a stunning, high-quality gift ready for the deadline without the wait for shipping!
