Shrimp Plant

I have a male cousin who has been bitten big time by the gardener's bug. Whenever he finds a new and interesting plant he either collects the seedpods or takes cuttings, which he then cultivates with great care. Some of these find-lings then make it to my home, where I greatly delight in continuing this process.

This shrimp plant was such a gift and has been growing with very little need for attention. The shrimp plant is a tropical plant, which has blooms that resemble shrimp.

The plant is potted is thriving outdoors under the patio cover. This way it receives full morning sun and partial afternoon shade. If you prefer to plant it in the soil it is recommended that there is a 2 to 3 feet spacing between each plant. Shrimp Plants will spread and grow 2 to 3 feet in height. I water mine as soon as the soil is dry to the touch. Since this plant will bloom year round it is important that you fertilize one a month with a all-purpose fertilizer.

If you like to take cuttings do so in spring or early summer, before the weather gets too hot. Pick a non flowering shoot and dip the end in rooting hormone. Then place it in a pot filled with potting soil. Keep the soil moist and out of direct sun. It is not recommended to fertilize until the plant has established roots.
