Sunken Lake at Butchart Garden
In 1909, when a limestone quarry in Victoria, Canada was exhausted, Jennie Butchart (1866–1950) set about turning the quarry into the Sunken Garden, which was completed in 1921. The lowest part was turned into a lake that is surrounded by lush greenery.
Since the quarry was pretty much in the shape of a super huge bowl, Jennie set out to have the sides all planted with trees and flowering bushes. Over the years the garden has filled in considerably and has turned into a serene oasis.
