Fireplace Makeover

Fireplace for dollhouse

Spent the day giving my fireplace a makeover! From white to warm wooden brown, it's now the perfect match for my Victorian bedroom vibes. Used a mix of Sharpies, acrylic, and oil paint to bring it to life. Still tweaking the hearth, but loving the transformation so far! 🔥

The fireplace is made of white plastic and I first thought I am just going to add a marbleized effect. However, since all the furniture in the Victorian Mansion's bedroom is brown wood, the white was too much of a contrast and clashed too much.

You can see the white on the interior of the fireplace.

In a previous project I had mentioned how Sharpies work well on Plastic. In order to get the rich, warm mahogany wood look I started with covering the entire fireplace with an Orange Sharpie. Once the surface was dry to the touch I used a brown Sharpie and added a layer of brown, but this time I let some of the orange show slightly through. Again after some drying time, areas that the Sharpie could not reach had to be touched up. Acrylics dry to a matt sheen and they would work as long as you apply a coat of glossy Mod Podge or a gloss spray varnish . I prefer using oil paints mixed with Liquin which dries within 24 hours and adds a just the right sheen for the wood surface. Black was used for the firebox, since that area should look matt. I am very happy with how the wood surface has turned out, since it now really shows off all the ornate designs on this fireplace.
