If you were a fan of The Civil Wars you were probably shocked to heat that they called it quits last summer. However, no reason to fret - Joy Williams the female vocalist of the group has gone solo and has released her fifth solo LP, the 1st after the split titled "Venus".
I received the album for preview and love it! The album retains some of the Civil War's old world feel, but with a more pop-oriented vibe. Just check it out for yourself~
"Woman" is a song about the strength of women. Joy Williams said the following about this track:
Joy Elizabeth Williams is an American singer-songwriter. She has won four Grammy awards and performed for five years with John Paul White as the folk rock duo Civil Wars. Born in California (Santa Cruz) she started her career by singing in church. Her parents worked in a ministry and when listing to the album hints of a certain rebirth of the artist drifts through the lyrics. I was a bit reminded of milder version of Annie Lennox, but the artist drew inspiration from artist such as Massive Attack, Portishead and Kate Bush and created an album uniquely in her own style.
Joy wrote her first song on June 24, 2013 in Nashville. She said she remembers that date so well because it was just a few days before her son Miles’ 1st birthday. She had been putting up some decorations in the house before she got in her car to go to the studio. She went on to write 75+ songs for this record over the following year.
The album is a break through album and only songs like "Venus", "Before I Sleep" and "Until the Levee" are the cross over pieces that are reminiscent of the Civil War style. The artist does not think that the duo will ever get back together again, but she feels that past and present musical influences such as the music of Justing TImberlake have left their marks on her music style today. The artist enjoys her ability to work solo, to pour her thoughts out and transform them into lyrics the way she feels they best represent how she feels and what she wants to say.
I found it interesting to learn that although Joy Williams was very successful in a duo setting, she seemed to have lost her sense of "self" . This album has helped her in her self-discovery and thereby produced a beautiful album with soft and gentle tunes sung with an authentic voice. I have to say I seldom like every song of an album, but this one is an exception. Each song is lovely and I like them all!
Acceptance - Transcendence - Transformation are all phrases that aptly fit this album!
