Margaret Sarah Carpenter was a British painter, who achieved great fame for her portraits. Born in Salisbury in 1793 she was married and a mother to two children. She painted in the manner of Sir Thomas Lawrence and started her painting career by copying Old Master paintings. In 1814 she left her parents home and moved to London to pursue a career as a portrait artist. She was considered to be the most accomplished woman portrait painter of her time and it's easy to see why.
