Johann Georg Meyer von Bremen (1813-1886) was born in Bremen, Germany. He attended the Duesseldorf Academy and became a student of Karl Ferdinand Sohn (1805-1867) and Friedrich Wilhelm Schadow (1789-1862).
The artists started his career by painting biblical scenes until he became greatly interested in the people he met in Bavaria and the moutainess regions of Switzerland. He devoted the remainder of his career to genre scenes.
I particular like his depictions of young children. In "Gretchen's Favorite he shows a tender moment between a young girl and her little doll. This painting was done in oil on panel and measures 5 3/4 x 4 5/8 inches. A rather small piece it does not fall short in great attention to detail.
