The Little Cook
Joseph Bail (1862-9121) was a French painter who painted many genre scenes. His style was very much influenced by the Dutch masters and I adore his depiction of kitchen helpers.
In A Handbook of Modern French Painting, (New York: Dodd, Mead and Company, 1914, pg. 329) D. Cady Eaton wrote, before Bail’s death, that he “… is an attractive and popular painter…His pictures are comfortable and homelike; not startling and ambitious, but social and friendly.
The Cooks Helper
The artist liked to use children as his models and had them pose as cooks and maids. This made for joyful scenes where his subjects went about their daily chores and often also interacted with the domesticated animals.
