As a portrait artist I am always drawn to paintings of people and I particularly like paintings of children with their pets. In this oil painting of "Companions" the artist William Frederick Yeames (1835-1918) has used a very muted palette. Overall it is a rather subdued painting, but I feel it works because it implies a quiet mood. There are absolutely no distractions which forces the viewer to engage with the direct gaze of the young girl and her pet.
