Gerome is best known for his Oriental paintings, but he also loved to paint lions and tigers.
As a young man he would often spend time at the Jardin des Plantes in Paris during the summer months and sketch the animals in their cages. A collection of animal themed paintings appeared around the 1880s, when Gérôme would place these wild creatures in imaginary landscapes.
