Charging Horsemen

Artist: Giulio Rosati (Italian, 1858-1917)
Title: Charging Horsemen outside the Northern Cemetery with the Mausoleum of Sultan Qaytbay and the Mosque of Muhammad Ali in the background, Cairo
Signed '-Gulio Rosati-' (lower right)
Medium: oil on canvas
Size: 25½ x 45½ in. (64.8 x 115.6 cm.

Rosati painted this piece by combining several prints, photographs and Oriental objects. Although Rosati was the most prolific Italian Orientalist painter, he had never actually traveled to the Orient. He combined the different element and created a painting set in an actual identifiable cemetery  with the Mausoleum of Sultan Qaytbay and the Mosque of Muhammad Ali on the Citadel.
