Charles Sprague Pearce was born in Boston, Massachusetts, 13 October, 1851. He travelled to Europe in the autumn of 1873 and studies under Leon Bonnat, in Paris (1873-75). He called Paris his home, but travelled to Egypt and Algiers during 1874-75. He exhibited his paintings frequently at the Paris salon, in New York, Boston, and Philadelphia and received numerous medals such as the medal of the third class at the salon, in 1883, the Belgian grand medal of honor in 1886, and the Temple gold medal of the Philadelphia academy in 1885.
