Decoupage has been around since the 18th century and is an inexpensive way to decorate items with your favorite images. It is believed that decoupage originated in Italy as an alternative to oriental decorated lacquer work and became a popular activity in France. The word decoupage originated from the French word decouper meaning ‘to cut ’.
Decoupage requires a painted background, paper cut outs to form a design, lacquering and sanding to acquire a finished effect of fine porcelain. Tissue paper is very suitable for decoupage since it is thin and can be layered easily to create interesting effects.
