Jules Joseph Lefebvre (1836-1911)was a French painter, who after winning the Prix de Rome in 1861. Upon spending time in Rome he bceame heavily influenced by Mannerism and followed the style of Andrea del Sarto. Lefebre was a very good draughtsman and his work shows applications of delicate colour. In 1866 both his parents and one of his sisters died causing the artist to fall into deep depression.
He eventually turned from history painting to portraits and nudes and exhibited portraits in Salons between 1855 and 1898 (e.g. Julia Foster Ward; Hartford, CT, Wadsworth Atheneum), but little is known about them since nearly all remain in private collections.
