Sophie Gengembre Anderson was born in Paris in 1823, the daughter of a Parisian architect and an English mother. She studied at the Paris Salon schools under Baron von Steuben and in her early years specialized in portraiture. Out the outbreak of the 1848 Revolution, she moved with her family to America, settling in Cincinnati where she made a living with her portrait painting. It was here that she met her husband, the British artist Walter Anderson. The couple returned to England in 1854. She had her first painting shown at the Royal Academy the following year and exhibited there until 1896. In 1860 Anderson visited Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and exhibited at the National Academy. Among her works were illustrations of ‘Historical Collections of the Great West’ by Henry Howe in 1822. Her work can be seen in the museum of Leicester and the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool.
