Hunter College Manhattan will be running an exhibit entitled 'Islamic Art and the West' February 7 - April 26,2008 .
Prof. Uelkue Bates has selected 40 objects from the Metropolitan Museum of Art to reveal stylistic modifications that occurred in the 19th-century Islamic art when cheap goods from Europe flooded the Middle East, including tableware and textiles. In addition to imitating Western goods, Eastern craftsmen adjusted their own quality and style to suit the changing tastes of their neighbors and Western tourists. Most of these artworks have been ignored by scholars and collectors until now. Source Fine Art Connoisseur Feb 2008 issue
