The Orient in a Mirror by Roland and Sabrina Michaud is a beautiful book of a very different sort.
This book looks for correlations from past and present by comparing them through beautiful imagery. Beautiful 20th century photos, taken in the Islamic World are juxtaposed against exquisite reproductions of 13th- to 20th-century Arabic, Turkish, Persian and Moghul miniatures. Extracts from the Koran, The Thousand and One Nights and the works of Muslim sages pepper the book and reinforce the connections.
As one flips through the pages, one is inenvitably struck how in some instances time seemed to have stopped. Yesterday is reflected in today and vice versa. It is as if one looks in a mirror, just to see the same reflection looking back.
