The Dogs in the Louvre

"Cardinal Granvelle's Dwarf" c.1560

I came across an interesting book titled the Dog's in the Louvre. Artists have often included dogs as symbols of positive values such as courage, loyalty and vigilance. Sometimes they are part of hunting scenes, part of domestic settings or genre paintings. Regardless of their purpose as hunters, guarding dogs or companions they appear as early as the third millennium BC as Mesopotamian statuettes.
