The Roman Colosseum

This is my third trip to Italy and on the agenda was Rome and Vatican City. I had heard that Rome was dirty and full of pick pockets, but can report that none of that was part of my experience. I loved Rome with it's many ancient sites. The only drawback was that Rome in October seemed to be a tourist destination and therefore rather crowded. I totally forgot that Europe's school vacation schedule is different than ours, but we managed to see just about everything that was planned.

The Colosseum's original Latin name was Amphitheatrum Flavium, often anglicized as Flavian Amphitheater. The building was constructed by emperors of the Flavian dynasty, following the reign of Nero. This name is still used in modern English, but generally the structure is better known as the Colosseum. Emperor Vespasian and Titus, were the builders of the Colosseum which must have been quiet an impressive building for it's time.

To think that this huge arena would be filled with spectators eager to see the killing of gladiators and the unfortunate is just got wrenching. I have never understood the need for such brutal past times. Even artists like Jean Leone Gerome used the ruins as backdrops for elaborate paintings.

The Colosseum's architecture is amazing and well worth seeing. I recommend buying the Roma Pass, which will allow you to get tickets at discounted rates for several major sites in Rome.
