Protecting Your Identity with RFID

It has happened twice now, that a relative has used a credit card while out and about to learn later that unauthorized charges were made. Makes you wonder how that can be possible and that brings me to today's sponsored post about RFID and protecting your Identity. 

I should probably first explain what RFID stands for. How does an RFID system work?

• Radio-Frequency Identification (RFID) is the use of radio waves to read and capture information stored on a tag attached to an object. A tag can be read from up to several feet away and does not need to be within direct line-of-sight of the reader to be tracked.

• RFID is used in cards that open electronic locks, cards that let you drive through a toll booth without stopping, the remote that opens your car door, workplace ID that unlocks the office door, and even passports. Credit cards are now becoming more equipped with these chips. 

The problem with this technology is that thieves have figured out a way how they can scan your information without ever having to touch the item that has the RFID embedded in it. RFID technology makes it fairly easy for someone with a handheld reader to brush up next to you and steal your card information, without you ever noticing what is happening. 

So how can you protect yourselves from such thefts? 

1. Tyvek sleeves: Tyvek credit card sleeves are inexpensive, and they have the ability to block RFID signals.

2. RFID wallets: RFID wallets will protect the cards you own from hackers passing by. All you have to do is put your money and cards in your wallet, and the material on the outside of the wallet will do the rest.

I received this great RFID wallet by Leopardd in exchange for my honest opinion and wanted to share with you why I like it. The leather wallet is made with a very soft, smooth, embossed Pebble Leather. There are twelve separate slots that can be used to store credit cards. I actually only used the eight slots in the center and still had enough room to place my car key in the wallet as well.
