Lobby at Hotel Bear
Sometimes you discover things in the most unlikely places. Who would have ever thought to find Bavarian Schwarzwald imports in a hotel in Midway - Utah at a place called the Zermatt Resort? Over Thanksgiving my daughter took me on a discovery tour and we went to check out the Hotel Bear. As soon as we parked, yodeling greeted our ears and brought a big grin to my face. Alpine music was something I grew up with when living in both Austria and Germany. Yes , there was a little tuck of homesickness too, but as soon as I thought of the ever cloudy skies of Europe that tuck let go real fast :) !

Hotel Bear in Midway, Utah
Apparently Swiss settlers were the first to populate Midway and as you drive through this small town, the influence in architecture is soon seen.

Intricate Fireplace Relief
I love going on little expeditions to find unusual things and this relief over the hotel's fireplace was nothing short of awesome in scale. Simple yet beautiful the carving looked as if was made especially for the area above the fireplace. We chatted a bit with the hotel staff and were told that wood carvers from Europe worked on these custom made pieces.
Check out my other photos below. The landscape painting was made entirely of wood inlay. The shading that was achieved with that technique was just incredible.
