The Frauenkirche in Dresden survived the firebombing during World War IIbut was totally burned out and collapsed the next day. It has been reconstructed as a landmark symbol of reconciliation between former warring enemies. The reconstruction of its exterior was completed in 2004, its interior in 2005 and after 13 years of rebuilding, the church was reconsecrated on 30 October 2005 with festive services lasting through the Protestant observance of Reformation Day on 31October. We were told that during the reconstruction as many of the original salvaged pieces that could be found were used. Since my mom had knee surgery and was in a wheelchair, we lucked out in getting past the very long lines. Actually people helped me haul the chair up the stairs and we ended up being the first people to enter the church.
