Being an artist means long hours in the studio standing or sitting, mostly in one place with a concentrated expression on your face. I intently gaze at the computer screen and my paintings all day long and less at my own reflection. Last time when I really looked in the mirror, I was shocked to see who was looking back. I asked were Enzie was and got a frown and arched eyebrows as an answer. Something had to be done and a couple of days back, I took action (see here) and signed up for a weight loss management program using Selvera. The idea behind Selvera is to motivate those of us who are on the pudgy side to engage with qualified dietitians through one-to-one, online counseling to make better lifestyle choices in regards to eating habits, exercise, and overall lifestyle.
The signup process was quick and easy, you know the usual - write your name, address and list a few health concerns. Then I was prompted to make my food selection. I have to be very honest, here, I stay away from processed food like the plague and don't like anything that says it's artificial, so when I saw powders, puddings and shakes my immediate reaction was "Oh My!"
So much so that I questioned whether this weight loss plan would even work for me since I have to keep glucose levels very even to avoid any type of spikes or drops that can lead to some nasty headaches. Right away, I contacted my go-to person at Selvera and she assured me that she will work out a plan and send me only products that would work for me. I was assured and waited for my package to arrive.
And here it is - the package has arrived - giddy with anticipation I just have to show you what was sent.
The package included the items I chose from a long list of foods that were developed by MDs, PhDs, and registered dietitians and which were approved by my dietician for my particular needs:
- Pasta Entrees (Creamy Alfredo and Cheesy Mac)
- Lite Entrees (Zesty Vegetable Chili with Beans and Vegetable Bean Soup)
- Soups (Chicken flavored & Vegetable Cream Soup)
- Nutrition Bars (Rich Chocolate Caramel, Chocolate Nutty Almond, Dark Chocolate Marshmallow, Crispy Fudge & Graham, Crispy Peanut and Mint Cocoa)
- Snack Bars (Zesty Lemon with Yogurt Flavored Coating)
- Pudding and Shake Mixes (I chose Strawberry Cream)
- Apple Cinnamon Oatmeal
- Cinnamon Crunch Cereal
- Cream Shakes (Chocolate, Mocha, Vanilla)
- Snacks (Honey Mustard Bites, Sour Cream & Onion Crunch and Barbecue Crunch and Pretzel Twist)
The idea of eating food out of packets is really not very appealing to me, but in order for this program to be effective, you have to start with something that your progress can be measured by. My Selvera dietitian will right away know how my body is responding to the food and after the initial month recommendations will be made as to what to buy from local stores that will work for my metabolism. This is a personalized plan and not a one size fits all concept, which is what I found attractive about Selvera's weight management plan, to begin with. I will be reporting on nutritional values and how these items taste in follow up posts, so hang in there with me.
In order to lose those unwanted pounds I also have to get active and start monitoring my progress, so that I can accurately report how I am doing to my assigned fitness and lifestyle counselors. The package included wireless monitoring tools from Withings, like this awesome Smart Body Analyzer scale and a Pedometer.
The Withings scale is quite impressive, it measures not only your weight but, body fat, heart rate, and even air quality. I think I might actually write a separate review about the scale, it just does so much!
The Withings pedometer links with your smartphone and tracks your daily activity like steps taken, intensity, elevation, calories burned, running and total distance. It monitors your sleep to let you know how well you are catching your zzzz's. This pedometer also measures heart rate and tracks the daily calorie intake. I still have to familiarize myself with this gadget and share more about it later.
So I think with all these goodies all bases are covered. Now that everything is synced and stored, I am ready to set up my first appointment with the dietician to hear what comes next. I felt like a kid at Christmas time, so excited to check everything out and it was a nice way to get energized about what's to come. I was so excited that I even joined my hubby on his run. Well, I walked, way behind, but never the less I got out of the studio and walked! Last time I mentioned that Selvera is all about lifestyle changes, I have some exciting things scheduled that might be of interest to you.
